Visit counts
We keep a simple, self-hosted count of page views per day and per page. To estimate an approximate country and city for that count, we look up your IP address in a location database that runs on our own server: your IP address never leaves that server and is never sent to an outside service.
So that one visit is not counted twice, we also keep a short-lived, irreversible fingerprint of your IP address, together with the pages that visit has opened. For as long as it exists, that record shows that one visitor read this particular set of pages, not who that visitor is. It is deleted about an hour after the last page view of the visit.
The fingerprint cannot be turned back into an address: it is scrambled with a secret key that exists only in the server's working memory, is replaced every day, and is never written to disk or included in any backup.
The counts themselves hold no fingerprint and no address, only a date, a page, a language, a country and a city. The city is dropped after 30 days, and the counts are deleted after 12 months.
